Thorold Library Well Used in Region

It's programs some of the most well used

Thorold city council hearing an impressive story concerning the growth of demand for the public library.

Chief Librarian Joanne DeQuadros revealed while Welland and Niagara Falls have more programs than Thorold, the number of people using Thorold's programs is the highest.

"Thorold also provides electronic resource assistance, so this is done by email... than all the other libraries, except for St. Catharines and Welland.  Niagara Falls is four times our size in population, and number of library branch locations, which is 4, we have one," she says.

She adds the number of email transactions at Thorold is also the highest.

Councillor Carmen DeRose asked the Chief Librarian if she's heard of changes concerning text books, after he noticed what technology is doing in his job as a teacher.  "I can't believe this is going on at the school boards.  They're actually getting rid of textbooks.  I switched grades this year from 7 to 8, and when I called for textbooks, they say they got rid of them."

DeQuadros says she hasn't heard anything.  She adds books that don't circulate into the community much may be removed, and given to community groups.  There's also been a rise in the time laptops are borrowed, as well as internet use.

She adds Thorold library is connected to 8 other locations in Niagara, forming LINK.... Libraries in Niagara Kooperative, which enables card users to find material around the region.
