There's greater collaboration between the Niagara Transit Commission and Niagara's Poverty Reduction Strategy.
Manager of Social Assistance Marc Todd explained how the two can be linked to help people.
Commission member Wayne Olson applauded the work, adding he's seeing more productive use of land and access to jobs. "The greatest barrier to our food bank usage just happens to be transportation, because people just can't get there. That's also going to give us 70% improved access to health care and schools, so, it's got wide support from the business community, the poverty community."
Next steps include increasing ability to implement community work, and monitor progress.
Member John Pachereva wondered how people will pay.
"Our app, for the online demand, you need a credit card. A lot of people that are marginalized, have debit cards. Would that go a long way to creating inclusion? Without a credit card, they're not able to facilitate rides."
Todd said they are working to modernize equipment so more people have access.
