Police say it happened in St. Catharines while she was on-duty

Police are investigating after an on-duty crossing guard was hit by a pickup truck in St. Catharines.

The crash happened around 3:15 this afternoon near Haig Street and Carlton Street.

Officials say the guard was standing on the corner when she was hit by the truck and became trapped underneath it.

Niagara Emergency Medical Services paramedics and St. Catharines Fire service members managed to free the guard.

The victim was taken to an out of region trauma centre with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Portions of Haig Street are closed while police investigate, and drivers are asked to avoid the area.

There is no word yet on what caused the crash.

The driver of the truck remained at the scene.
