NRP Offer Halloween Safety Tips

Kids reminded to use sidewalks and remain visible

Niagara Regional Police is offering some tips to keep trick-or-treaters safe tonight.

Constable Barry Ravenek says it's easy for kids to get excited and carried away as they go door to door.

"We know kids will get excited, and they'll want to run house to house to collect as much candy as they can, but it's important to remain on sidewalks and cross the street at designated crosswalks and traffic-controlled intersections," he says.

He adds parents should consider adding reflective tape to their child's costume, or getting them to carry glow sticks or a flashlight to make it easier for drivers to see them.

The constable also has some tips for drivers.  "We know the popular trick-or-treat times will be from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., so drivers should be especially alert during these times, particularly when driving through subdivisions and entering and exiting driveways."

He adds motorists should be mindful of their speed.

Homeowners who plan to give out candy are reminded to turn on all outdoor lights and make sure the path to their door is clear.

Parents are also reminded to check their kid's candy, and throw it out if it has been opened or not in the original packaging.

If you suspect your child's candy has been tampered with, you can call Niagara Regional Police at 905-688-4111.
