MPPs Calling for More Investment in Nutrition Programs

Province announced $5 million for snack and meal programs in schools

A couple of local MPPs say the province needs to do more to help student nutrition programs.

Yesterday, the Ontario government announced a $5 million investment in the Student Nutrition Program.

MPPs Jennie Stevens and Wayne Gates say it's a good start, but more needs to be done.

"Ontario is grappling with an affordability crisis, and it's our responsibility to ensure no child goes to school on an empty stomach," said Gates. "The community of Niagara has shown what's possible when we come together for a shared cause, but the advocacy doesn't end here. This is just a first step in addressing a program that hadn't seen a funding increase in almost a decade."

Locally, agencies like Niagara Nutrition Partners have been pushing for more funding in order to keep up with demand.

Stevens adds advocacy work here in Niagara helped lead to the funding announcement

"This journey began right here in Niagara, and the top-up for school nutrition programs is a credit to the relentless advocacy of our service providers and community members."

It's not yet know how much money Niagara Nutrition Partners will get.
