Port Colborne building owner fined
A hefty fine has been issued for a building owner in Port Colborne.
In March 2022, Port Colborne Fire & Emergency Services responded to a safety concern at 19 Nickel Street.
The property had 10 residential units.
After fire code violations were found, the owner of the building was charged with failing to maintain the fire alarm system and other life safety equipment.
On October 12th, 2023, the owner of the property, 11641514 Canada Inc. was convicted of violating the Ontario Fire Code.
The owner was fined $15,000 plus court costs and victim surcharges.
The same day, the Director of the Corporation was convicted of the same offence, and fined $4,000.
"It is incumbent on property owners to ensure their properties always remain in compliance with the Fire Code," said Fire Chief Scott Lawson. "This ensures the safety of occupants and emergency personnel who may need to respond to the location."
Building owners are required to maintain fire alarm systems and life safety equipment in multi-unit buildings.
Failing to meet these requirements could results in fines of up to $500,000 for a corporation or $50,000 for an individual.
