Board says it's committed to maintaining safe environment

The DSBN is responding to rallies for and against gender identity policies in schools.

Across Canada, protests and counter protests are taking place in response to policies surrounding gender identity in school.

DSBN Director of Education Warren Hoshizaki says his main priority is to support and keep 2SLGBTQ+ students and staff safe.

"Our human rights policy prohibits occurrences of hate and/or bias as well as all forms of discrimination and harassment based on protected grounds. This includes ensuring transgender and gender diverse students have the right to openly be who they are and express their gender identity."

The "1 Million March 4 Children" demonstrations are taking place in several cities.

On the group's website, organizers say the rallies are being held to advocate for "elimination of the sexual orientation and gender identity curriculum, pronouns, gender ideology and mixed bathrooms in schools."

Hoshizaki's statement is available below.
