Councillor Taking Action after Stabbings

Lori Lococo says people tell her they don't feel safe, after stabbings in Niagara Falls, one of them fatal

A Niagara Falls city councillor is hearing from residents they don't feel safe after two recent stabbings, one of them fatal.

The stabbings happened on Victoria Avenue, and Huron Street, so Lori Lococo tells us they're looking into Community Safety Groups.

"There could be awareness of what to do, such as lock your doors, maybe lighting, and cameras... if something is happening, what to do, or what not to do.  You don't want to put yourself in harms way or create additional issues," she says.

She admits some people question the value of Community Safety Groups, and that police are needed to deal with certain problems.

The councillor adds she was told at city council for now there isn't enough city staff to look into this, but they will speak to police.  "There are other communities such as Barrie, Brampton, Pickering, Ottawa, they have Community Safety Groups... they might deal with traffic, or speeding, crime, by-laws... it could include a BIA, school board."

She adds this would not be for vigilantism, but to bring greater awareness of what individuals can do for safety.

Meanwhile, there was another stabbing in Niagara Falls this weekend, in which a man was seriously hurt.

Police say he got into a fight with one of four suspects, when the stabbing happened on Fallsview Boulevard, near Murray, and eventually the four men beat him up.  Police are looking for 4 Asian suspects.
