Votes nay to property tax forgiveness, but yay to recreational fee assistance
A Niagara Falls area Community Food Literacy Centre has been denied by city council for help in paying property taxes.
Councillor Lori Lococo noted she has tried to help GROW in accessing grants, while acknowledging the great work done by the group.
"They do a lot. It's a different theory than a soup kitchen, or a Project Share or a food bank. But I really have an issue with someone not paying their property taxes and then coming to the city to ask for forgiveness when they do have the money when you look at their financial statements," she says.
The councillor is concerned it would lead to granting forgiveness to other groups too.
However, fellow Councillor Wayne Campbell pointed out they need to help GROW to avoid passing fees to the community. "How are those people going to pay for the recreation fee? As far as I'm concerned it's wrong saying no to them, and right to the recreation and culture."
City council passed a pilot project granting help for people to pay recreational fees they otherwise couldn't afford.
