A wanted suspect was killed after exchange of gunfire with police, after Mississauga domestic incident
A man is dead after a dramatic shootout between police and the suspect in Welland this weekend.
Niagara Regional police say they were called yesterday by Peel police concerning a 26-year old man wanted in connection to a domestic-related incident that involved a gun in Mississauga on Friday.
Police learned the man was in a Welland home in the Ontario Road and King Street area, and surrounded it last night at around 9:15.
Ontario's Special Investigations Unit says preliminary information suggests the suspect fired at police, to which police fired back. Tear gas was fired into the house, which forced the man out, but then there was more gunfire back and forth, resulting in the suspect being shot and killed.
Police add one of their own was shot, taken to hospital, and released.
An autopsy will be done on the suspect tomorrow.
Due to this being a shooting involving police, the province's Special Investigations Unit has taken over the case, and that is all the detail to be released at this time.
Police add there is no on-going risk to public safety.
