NDP tried to do this in 2020
Ontario's NDP wants to make the province's Chief Medical Officer of Health an independent officer of the legislature.
Currently the province's top doctor is accountable to the Minister of Health and the Legislative Assembly of Ontario.
If the NDP's bill is passed, it would enable a committee to allow elected officials to ask questions of the Chief Medical Officer of Health.
The NDP first attempted to pass this in 2020.
