Year Round Tennis to Start in St. Catharines

City council voted for project that'll see inflatable dome built at Merritton Community Centre

Looks like you'll be able to play tennis year round in St. Catharines starting next summer.

City council voted Monday night for a multi-partner deal costing over $844,000, by adding a new inflatable dome at Merritton Community Centre.

The deal is between the City, Tennis Clubs of Canada, St. Catharines Tennis Alliance and the Merritton Lions Club.

Tennis Clubs of Canada CEO Adam Seigel says data shows tennis can add 9.7 years to life expectancy.  "It's because of not only the physical benefits, but the mental and social well-being.  We see it through all ages and all demographics.  However, we can only achieve these benefits if we have tennis year round."

The dome would go up in October and come down in April.

St. Catharines Tennis Alliance spokesperson Chris Richard is looking forward to this since the old club closed on Melbourne Avenue years ago.

"Men's and women's tennis leagues... I'd like to have mixed tennis social nights, that's something they have in tennis clubs in Welland and Niagara-on-the-Lake, I've participated, they're wonderful events.  And, we'd like to have morning and afternoon youth programs," he says.

Currently there are three courts at the Community Centre, but a 4th will be added along with the dome.
