Work On Five Welland Parks Delayed

Pandemic results in delays to construction and updates to five Welland parks.

City of Welland staff say updates and construction work being done to five local parks are behind schedule due to supply issues caused by the pandemic.

Work being done on Chippawa, Cooks Mills, Elmwood, Glenwood and Sparrow Meadows is expected to take four to six weeks longer than originally anticipated.

"We've seen and heard of many projects, and not just with parks, being delayed as a result of lack of availability of materials," said Rob Axiak, director of community services. "It's frustrating for all those involved, but it will be worth the wait. We plan to adapt to these changing timelines and do what we can to have the parks ready as soon as possible for everyone to enjoy."

Later this month, excavation, drainage and concrete work will begin at Chippawa Park, while similar tasks will start next month at Cook Mills, Elmwood and Glenwood parks.

Play equipment is expected to be installed at Chippawa Park by February/March 2022, with the other three parks expected to follow in March/April 2022, depending on weather.

This will be followed by rubber surfacing and landscaping.

Sparrow Meadows Park is currently in the design phase, and is expected to be completed next fall.
