Money to be used towards the construction of an on-site pet shelter, as well as prevention and public education programs.

Women's Place of South Niagara has received a donation of $1 million.

The donation was made by local couple Greg and Diane Slaight, who have been long-time donors to numerous charities in Niagara.

Women's Place board president Teresa Quinlin-Murphy says the gift will help the organization achieve some important goals.

"When we talk about Women’s Place’s goals for the future, we often talk about two things: the importance of awareness and education programming in ending domestic and dating violence for good, and how we can improve the safety of women and children experiencing abuse in Niagara. With this generous gift, Greg and Diane Slaight have provided a unique opportunity to make great strides in achieving both goals. The impact of their gift will be felt for generations to come."

In addition to prevention and intervention-based efforts, some of the funds will also be used towards the building of an on-site pet shelter.

The organization says pets are often targeted by abusive partners and are important sources of comfort for women and children during a difficult time.

The Slaights say they hope their gift has inspired others to give as well.
