Welland to Host Ontario Performance Centre for Row Ontario

The Rose City has won a bid to host the Ontario Performance Centre.

WIFC Development Officer Erin Carl says this means the Welland International Flatwater Centre will now be home to Row Ontario events and the Ontario Academy of Rowing.

"Its bringing athletes to Welland to train at the academy all year as well as bringing participants from across Ontario and from the United States to compete at the four Row Ontario property events that are held throughout the season."

Carl says Row Ontario's two master regattas will be taking place on north course while the small boat trials and the Provincial Championships will be held on the south course.

The Ontario Academy of Rowing will be held at the Welland Community Boathouse at the end of Thorold Road.

Row Ontario Executive Director Andrew Backer says Welland is the perfect place for these athletes to train and compete.

Row Ontario has also appointed Dr. Amanda Schweinbenz to lead the Ontario Performance Centre.

She's the head coach of Team Ontario's rowing team for the 2021 Canada Summer Games.

Schweinbenz has also been head coach of the Sudbury Rowing Club since 2011.
