A $10,000 grant will help Welland replace trees lost to disease
The City of Welland has received $10,000 to rejuvenate its tree canopy.
About 250 trees were removed along Kingsway due to Emerald Ash Borer, a species of beetle that can cause damage to trees.
The grant, which was received from Tree Canada and the LCBO's Spirit of Sustainability initiative, will allow the city to plan 20 native tree species along the canal, primarily near Kingway and Glenwood Parkway.
"Increasing canopy in Welland is important to the Community Services - Parks and Forestry Division," said Dave Steven, manager of parks, forestry, cemeteries, operations, and development. "By improving our park green spaces through canopy replacement, it provides residents with an area that is more inviting and cooler for recreation and relaxation, plus they provide habitat and food for animals."
The City is looking for five to ten volunteers to join Tree Canada and help plant and mulch the new trees.
Planting will take place on Friday, October 27th, and volunteers will be given all necessary supplies.
