Council voted to delay looking into giving 8 minutes for each person to speak, instead of the current 5
A Welland city councillor wants to extend the amount of time to speak during meetings from 5-minutes to 8.
John Chiocchio wanted the idea passed recently, but his colleagues voted to delay it to a later date.
He says he wasn't elected to just ask questions, and get an answer. "This is about sharing ideas, listening to other councillors. 'Oh, I didn't think about that, oh, they've got a different point of view, or, I heard what he said, maybe he's right'. That's what this is about, we talk about teamwork, bringing council together."
Councillor Mary Ann Grimaldi says councillors spend too much of the 5-minutes repeating themselves.
Councillor Leo Van Vliet says while he doesn't disagree with the idea, he doesn't feel much more will get accomplished during meetings with the idea. "If I look back in the 1990s, and all the stuff we had to do then, and we got it done. Now, we're leaving way too many things at 11pm, and that should never be."
Councillor Chiocchio feels some groups presenting to council need a bit more time.
