Vehicle Slams into Cruiser at 90kms

Police say this happened as driver didn't heed to Move Over law

A vivid reminder from provincial police to the obey the law and move over when approaching emergency vehicles on the side of the highway.

This is the Move Over law, meaning drivers must slow down, and move over a lane if safe to do so to keep emergency crews safe.

OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt recently posted on-line a story with another officer named Paul, who was walking to his cruiser on the side of the 403 in Hamilton.  "I could see it about a kilometre away.... Everybody was slowing down and moving over, except for one individual who hit the back end of my cruiser at about 90kms an hour.... I had some torn ligaments and tendons in my hand."

Sergeant Schmidt says the officer was off for quite some time recovering.

"I know you were off work for some time.... but, this is our office, this is where we work, and this is where we want to get home at the end of our shift. When you see flashing lights, red and blue off a police car, amber lights off a tow truck, please, slow down when you approach, and move over to an adjacent lane is there is one available," he says.
