Two local police officers have been awarded the Ontario Medal for Police Bravery

A pair of Niagara Regional Police officers have been given the province's highest honour for police officers.

The province has awarded Constables Mike Delano and Christian Gifford with the Ontario Medal for Police Bravery.

On Christmas Day, 2020, the pair were among a group of officers responding to a report of a car being driven by a suicidal man holding a knife in St. Catharines.

The suspect had been involved in an altercation with several family members at his parents home.

Before he left, several family members had been assaulted and he had consumed an unknown quantity of medications.

After police stopped the vehicle, the suspect charged at Constable Delano with a knife.

Constable Gifford provided back up, and the suspect was hit several times before he stopped.

The officers then helped administer first aid before paramedics arrived, which authorities say saved his life.

Earlier today, the province awarded 21 police officers with the Ontario Medal for Police Bravery and 13 firefighters with the Ontario Medal for Firefighter Bravery.
