TSB Releases Ship Collision Report

Hydrodynamic forces caused a Canadian cargo vessel to veer off-course on the Welland Canal and strike an ocean-going ship more than two years ago, says the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB).

The collision between McKeil Marine’s Florence Spirit and dship Carriers’ M/V Alanis took place July 11, 2020, near mile marker 16 on the canal, south of Welland’s East Main Street tunnel and east of Memorial Park.

At the time, Florence Spirit, was headed toward Lake Ontario, while Alanis, was headed to Lake Erie.

The vessels collided starboard to starboard by their anchors. The collision was caught on video by people walking a path alongside the canal.

Crew members on both vessels — 16 on Alanis and 14 on Florence Spirt — were not injured in the collision, which led to both ships sustaining extensive structural damage to their hulls.
