Tributes Pour In For Muslim Family Killed

Tributes are pouring in across the country for a Muslim family killed on Sunday in a hit and run.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke of the London tragedy in the House of Commons today, describing the incident as "a terrorist attack, motivated by hatred."

Premier Doug Ford has also issued a statement.

"In response to this terribly tragedy, all government events have been cancelled for the remainder of today in order to help give the family and community the space they need to grieve this devastating loss of life."

Both the Prime Minister and the Premier are slated to attend a vigil for the victims tonight at the London Muslim Mosque.

Premier Ford says people will be allowed to attend the vigil.

Here in Niagara, the Town of Lincoln is flying flags at half-mast in memory of the victims.

Niagara Regional Chair Jim Bradley has also released a statement, calling the attack "an act of cowardice", and encouraged the community to band together to fight prejudice.

"Unfortunately, this violent act of Islamophobia is not an isolated incident, and we must all work together to eliminate hatred and prejudice where it exists."

A family spokesperson named the deceased as Salman Afzaal, his wife Madhia, their daughter Yumna, and Salman's mother.

Their nine year old son Fayez Afzaal survived, and is said to be recovering.

The 20 year old suspect is facing four charges of first degree murder, and one count of attempted murder.

Further charges are pending.
