Town of Fort Erie Holds Special Council Meeting Over Urgent Care Changes

The Town is urging Niagara Health to reverse decision to cut overnight hours at the urgent care centre

The Town of Fort Erie is asking Niagara Health to change course on a decision to reduce hours at the urgent care centre.

Last week, the organization announced it was reducing hours at urgent care centres in Fort Erie and Port Colborne, citing staffing shortages.

Starting July 5th, the urgent care centres will be open between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.

On Monday, the Town held a special council meeting to discuss the issue.

Councilors are also calling on Niagara Health to work with the Town on a plan to secure the necessary funding and staffing to allow the centre to provide 24/7 service.

"It is not acceptable for the residents to be treated as second-class citizens when it comes to access to health care," says Mayor Wayne Redekop. " It has become increasingly evident over the past two decades that Fort Erie will have to find its own solution to ensuring that our residents have long term access to the primary, after hours and diagnostic health care we need and deserve.  This is an "all hands on deck" situation for our community."

The Town also plans to ask the province to fund a Health Team for Fort Erie to address health care needs of residents, and is urging the federal and provincial governments to take immediate action to address staffing shortages in healthcare.
