Tempers Flair Between Councillor and IC

Thorold councillor challenges Integrity Commissioner over disinformation accusations

Thorold mayor Terry Ugulini had to steer through some tense moments during council meeting Wednesday.

It happened when Councillor Jim Handley, the mayor, and the integrity commissioner spoke over each other concerning recommendations the councillor receive a 90-day pay suspension and be reprimanded over some social media posts.

"Someone is speaking, it's not your turn to speak right now.  When it's your turn to speak, I'll let you speak, don't interrupt!"

Integrity Commissioner John Mascarin says the councillor spread misinformation about COVID-19 and trucker protests.

Council was asked to vote on the recommendations, but it decided instead to defer the matter to the next meeting.

Councillor Anthony Longo adds too many questions remain.  "Without me, as Councillor Handley said, reading an email that came to me today at 11 o'clock, I didn't read it.... I understand it's 14 pages from a lawyer.  I'd need 2 weeks to understand that."

Councillor Handley spoke against the 90 day suspension and that his rights are being abused.
