Strike Closes St. Lawrence Seaway

The Seaway has applied to have ships still move cargo

Don't expect to see any ships sailing through the entire St. Lawrence Seaway, from Montreal to Lake Erie.

The union Unifor says it's closed after hundreds of workers walk off the job yesterday.

Last year ships carried $16.7-billion worth of cargo.

The union says it remains far apart from management on wages, the key discussion point.

The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation added Friday negotiation progress had been slow and wage demands could lead to higher tolls.

The strike impacts some 360 workers ranging from engineers to administrators in five unions.

Talks began in June with the help of a federal mediator.

The Corporation also tells us it's put forth a request to the Canada Industrial Relations Board, to allow ships to keep moving during the work stoppage.
