Federal government workers say they have lots of support across Canada
A large crowd of federal public sector workers have been picketing around the downtown government buildings in Niagara Falls this morning.
St. Catharines strike captain Zaineel Braun told us many are struggling with wages that don't keep up with inflation.
She couldn't say how long this will take.
"We're at the table, we're going to be here as long as it takes, to get a fair contract. Our workers are dedicated, we're working hard to spread the message. We're hopeful for a contract, I mean, nobody wants to be on strike, but we'll do what we need to do," she says.
She added they've been negotiating with the federal government for over two years, looking for a new contract.
Part of that is continuing to push for a 13% pay increase over 3 to 4 years, or something that stays with inflation, as well as better work/life balance, including for those who have families.
She added they have many term employees, and no job security. "But, as far as private sector, unionized, non-unionized workers.... we should be standing up for what we deserve. We were available for Canada during the pandemic, we issued benefits, we've received accolades from the government."
The picket leader adds they recognize how inconvenient this may be for some considering it's tax season, but they are trying to set the bar for everyone.
