Comes after deaths in Sault Ste. Marie and Lincoln

St. Catharines MPP Jennie Stevens is urging the province to take a stance against femicide.

She spoke in the legislature today, calling on the province to act on the recommendations of the Renfrew County Inquest.

"We stand at a crossroads, faced with an epidemic of intimate partner violence. It has stolen a life in Niagara two weeks ago, and just yesterday, Sault Ste. Marie lost five more," said Stevens. "The time for half measures and symbolic gestures is over, we are facing a crisis, and we need to act now to save lives."

The Niagara Region has declared intimate partner violence an epidemic, as well as several municipalities across the province.

The inquest, which was launched in response to the murders of three women in Ottawa in 2015, included several recommendations.

The province has rejected some of the recommendations, including one to declare intimate partner violence an epidemic, and another to create a survivor advocate.

However, it did accept some of the recommendations, including creating a new approach to public education campaigns, and providing services to address perpetrators of IPV.
