St. Catharines MPP Asking Ford to Stop Corporation From Converting Single Homes to Rental Units

St. Catharines MPP Jennie Stevens is urging the Premier to take action against a company planning to purchase single family homes across the province.

In a letter, Stevens notes Core Development Group is planning to spend $1 billion on existing single-family houses, and converting them to two-family rental units in several cities, including St. Catharines.

The MPP says this will make home ownership even harder for people in affected communities.

"This will make the dream of home ownership even further out of reach for people in my community. It will drive up housing prices. And it will force young people to leave this community to find an affordable home, leaving parents to watch as their kids have no choice but to leave the community they were raised in."

According to the recent affordability index released by Desjardins, Niagara experienced a 14 percent decrease in housing affordability, which was the largest decrease in the entire country last year.

Stevens suggests the province implement the NDP plan to scrap vacancy decontrol, which she says would stop landlords from pushing tenants out and replacing them with tenants paying a higher rent.
