St. Catharines Man Arrested After Lengthy Stand Off

28 year old facing assault with weapon charge

A 12 hour standoff over the weekend in St. Catharines ended peacefully.

On Sunday, Niagara Regional Police responded to reports of an armed person in the area of Geneva Street and Welland Avenue.

Investigation revealed that a property manager had been threatened by a male with a knife.

Officers located the male on the roof of a building armed with a knife.

The male refused to drop the knife, and officers from the NRPS Emergency Task Unit and Crisis Negotiators were called to the scene.

Officers were able to access the roof with the assistance of the St. Catharines Fire Service and one of their ladder trucks.

Geneva Street between North Street and Welland Avenue was closed while negotiations were ongoing.

At 3:15 a.m. the suspect was arrested.

28 year old Rory Docherty of St. Catharines has been arrested and charged with assault with a weapon.

Docherty was transported to a local hospital for medical care.
