Council says having the bridges up at the same time would cut Port Weller off from emergency services

St. Catharines city council is looking to make sure the Carlton Street and Lakeshore Road bridges are not up at the same time.

Council has put forth a motion to arrange a meeting with local MPs, Transport Canada and the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority.

Councillor Phillips notes in an emergency it takes too long to drop one bridge when both are up.

"This has nothing to do with the convenience of getting to Niagara-on-the-Lake on time for your Shaw Festival show. It has everything to do with the safety of the people of Port Weller east. There is no reason that those two bridges have to be up at the same time."

He says the recent explosion in Port Weller has brought the issue to the forefront.
