St. Catharines Council Wants Building Code Change

It says it's needed to help spur development of smaller rental units

St. Catharines city council wants the province to help in its bid to add 11,000 new residential property units by 2031.

To do that, council is asking the Ontario government to reduce the legal size of a master bedroom to accommodate smaller rentals.

City staff explained why the province has the current requirement.  "9.8 square meters is roughly 105 square feet, so yes, you can access a bed in the room by at least two sides."

Councillor Greg Miller added the plan is to eliminate the term Master Bedroom.

"This specifically came from a resident who is trying to have a legal one bedroom apartment, but cannot due to the stipulation that a master bedroom with specific dimensions is required," he says.
