Speedbumps Considered for Quaker Road

Welland council voting for further information after resident complaints of speeding

If you live on Quaker Road in Welland, near Towpath, you may see speedbumps in the future.

City council voted for more information after hearing of resident complaints about speeding.

However, Director of Planning Grant Munday said traffic studies pointed out there's no need for speedbumps.  "The other factor here is, and maybe residents aren't aware of this, but Quaker Road and Towpath Road are going to be totally redone, and this will happen in the next five years. Sidewalks on both sides of the road, as well as bike lanes."

City staff added an Environmental Assessment would be needed, meaning work won't be done for a number of years.

Councillor Tony DiMarco added traffic has gotten heavier with development.

"I've seen cars fly down, right after the stop sign, they just pick up and go.  The report is saying no to the speedbumps, but it comes down to a safety thing.... there are no sidewalks here," he says.

City staff will get back to council concerning the cost.
