Seniors Fined for Not Leaving Hospital: MPP

Wayne Gates accuses the government of charging people for refusing long-term care they don't want

Niagara Falls NDP MPP is accusing the Ford government of charging seniors $400 a day if they refuse to leave a hospital bed for a long-term care home not of their choosing.

In a new release today, Wayne Gates added one person was fined $5,200.

"Under Bill 7, patients can be sent to a long-term care facility up to 150kms away from their homes, without their consent."

Minister of Long Term Care Stan Cho rebutted more seniors have found a place to live than during previous governments, and accused the NDP of not raising these questions when the liberals were in power.

"This morning the cameras must be on, because the member stands in this place and claims to be a defender of seniors.  But, in his own riding, Oakwood Manor, Crescent Manor, Radiant Care Manor, long list and thousands of beds the member votes against building beds in his own riding, and support for beds, in his own riding."

Gates said 6,000 seniors died during the pandemic, under the government's watch.
