Scam Artists Pretending to be NPEI Employees Over the Phone

Niagara Peninsula Energy Inc. is warning it's customers about a new scam in the area.

The utility says fraudsters have been posing as NPEI employees over the phone.

They have been calling customers, threatening to disconnect power if they don't pay an outstanding bill right away.

The scam artists will ask for your phone number, account number and your credit card information.

They're also using a non NPEI number, but if you call it the message sounds a lot like the one you would hear if you called the real NPEI.

Real NPEI employees would never threaten to disconnect power immediately. They would also never ask for a payment through pre-paid credit card or bitcoin.

If you receive a phone call like this, NPEI says you should hang up the phone immediately and contact their Customer Care Line (1-877-270-3938) and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (1-888-495-8501.)
