The Ontario government has introduced the "Hazel McCallion Act", which would dissolve the Peel region and make Mississauga, Caledon and Brampton independent, if passed

PEEL REGION - The province has announced plans to dissolve the region of Peel.

If passed, the "Hazel McCallion Act" would begin the process of dissolving the region, and making Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon standalone cities.

"Our government is working with our municipal partners to provide the tools and autonomy required to deliver on our shared commitments to the people of Ontario, including addressing the housing supply crisis," said Steve Clark, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. "The Region of Peel includes some of the largest and fastest-growing municipalities in Canada and is poised for significant growth over the next decade. Our government is supporting this growth by cutting red tape and improving efficiency while maintaining and improving the high level of local services Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon residents rightly expect."

Clark says the province would create a transition board of five people to facilitate the change.

It would oversee the financial affairs of the region and municipalities, and provide recommendations to the three cities.

If passed, the proposed changes would take effect on January 1st, 2025.

The province also says in the coming weeks, it will name regional facilitiators to assess the upper-tier municipalities of Durham, Niagara, Halton, York, Waterloo and Simcoe.

The facilitators will look at whether the upper-tier government for those regions meets the needs of communities or whether lower-tier municipalities can handle dissolution.

Officials say this is being done to help local governments prepare for future growth and make good on municipal housing pledges.
