Regional Council Approves New Methodology for Council Pay Increases

Regional Council will receive annual pay increases based on the salary structure of non-union employees.

Sabrina Hill sat on the Citizens Committee on Council Remuneration. She says they decided to move away from the Consumer Price Index and the Conference Board of Canada's inflation index.

"I believe the majority or all of the committee felt those metrics didn't make sense. They were not particularly accountable or transparent and the residents of Niagara couldn't fully understand that procedure."

She says the new method makes everything simple.

"Every year Human Resources will come up with an amount that better reflects the actual cost of labour increases."

Under the new methodology, Niagara's Regional Councillors will receive a 1.5 percent increase on December 1st of this year.

This will not be retro-active to December 1st, 2018.

The new methodology also won't be applied to the Regional Chair until the next term of Regional Council.
