Niagara representatives at Queen's Park this week to meet with cabinet ministers

Local officials have made their way to Queens Park to discuss issues affecting Niagara.

As part of "Niagara Week", several mayors and councilors are meeting with cabinet ministers to discuss priorities for the area.

Regional Chair Jim Bradley says one of the biggest issues is the South Niagara Wastewater Treatment Plant.

"Funding for the South Niagara Falls Wastewater Treatment Plant..it's very expensive. It's needed very much to addomodate more housing in Niagara Falls as well as the new hospital. It'll be over $300 million, so we're looking for a provincial contribution along with a federal contribution."

Other topics on the agenda include reimbursement for local tax dollars used to mitigate ambulance offload delays and the need for more primary care.

Previous "Niagara Week" efforts have led to partnerships with the province on projects such as daily GO train service to Niagara, and funding for improvements to Highway 406.

Bradley says he's feeling positive this year's event will yield results.

"I'm optimistic," he notes. "We've been able to work cooperatively with them on a number of issues. So I'm optimistic we'll at least get a good hearing."
