Region Not Hindering Home Building: Councillor

Albert Witteveen, along with colleagues, say the region is getting approvals granted

Pushback from Niagara regional council that it's not doing enough to help get more homes built, alongside the province.

Councillor Albert Witteveen spoke to a report that shows the region is not hindering growth.

"That message has to be clear, that we are ahead of the curve, and we are doing our best job in providing and approving the supply."

The councillor added the report shows the industry can stop blaming the region for not doing its part when approval to build has already been given.

The Chair says this region is not the only one that has approved homes ready to be built.

Jim Bradley pointed out developers are not building, in some cases with valid reasons.

He added most municipalities are trying.  "I suspect that what happened at AMO (Association of Municipalities of Ontario) was that in the meetings with various ministers, the point was made by many municipalities that we have indeed done what we can to approve housing units in our area."

The chair says he's spoken with the housing minister who appreciates the region is trying.
