10 cameras starting pilot project, designed to stop people from running red lights
Better think twice if you have a habit of trying to squeak through on a red light, never mind a yellow.
The Niagara region has set up 10 red light cameras to take pictures of violators, under a pilot project.
City staff say there is criteria in choosing which intersections. "The first one was focused on the number of violations and the collision history at the intersection. The second criteria used was to make sure it was physically possible to install the camera technology at that intersection."
City staff add the cameras are not designed to target anyone making a right turn on a red.
The cameras just need to be activated, and the region then waits for data to come in.
"So, we need a good 6 to 12 months of information on the current system. Within that, we will be back to council and committee in early 2024, with a report on the early results of this program."
And just like photo radar, city staff say any ticket filed against a vehicle will be the owner's responsibility and not the driver's.
