Region Faces Pipe Cleanup from Biosolids Plant

It says a pipe that moves sludge from Garner Road is partially clogged, considering options

Niagara regional council dealing with a partially blocked 1.3km pipe that services sludge removal from the Garner Road Biosolids plant and wastewater treatment plants.

Currently trucks are helping to move that sludge.

Public Works Commissioner Bruce Zvaniga told council other options are being looked at to reduce the cost of trucking.  "The material itself comes originally in a liquid form, if we can reduce the water content there, we'll need fewer trucks, and we wouldn't have to return that back to the sewage treatment plant."

City staff added they are trying to clean the pipe, as well as get rid of 90 degree angles which can cause build-up, and they're looking at a consultant's recommendation they build a new one.

Some expressed frustration, including Councillor Robert Foster who made reference to the pipe's installation in 2012.  "We spend some pretty hard earned capital money on these types of things, and, wow, we've got 11 years out of a pipe we put in the ground, that probably should've lasted 50 years... so, I'm a little not happy about that."
