Re-offending Drug Traffickers Concerning: Police

Police Services Board member Gibson pointed to the courts, asked the Chief what can be done

Concern at Niagara police services board at the large number of people arrested for drug trafficking, who are released only to re-offend soon after.

Chief Bryan MacCulloch gave the board his regular update on the number of recent arrests.

He says police organizations are trying to tighten the bail system.

Board member Kevin Gibson pointed to the court system as the problem.  "The public will often say 'Oh, they got arrested, why aren't they in jail?' When, in fact, there are a myriad of rules around releasing offenders and the bail reform act."

He thanked the Chief for a large number of recent drug arrests.

The Chief added they are trying to get help for the ROPE unit.  "Seeking approval to have an officer assigned to the ROPE unit, which specifically looks after individuals who are at high risk to re-offend."
