Public Safety Could be Jeopardized: Chief

NRP Chief addressed what could happen as the Region pushes for budget restraint

A dire warning from the Chief of Niagara Regional police concerning the region's desire to trim the police budget.

Bryan MacCulloch told the police services board he understands taxpayers are maxed out.

But, he points to what can happen with a further $2-million cut.  "As Chief of Police for one of the largest growing municipalities in Ontario, I believe further cuts would potentially jeopardize public safety."

The regional government faces continuous calls and emails concerning rising tax rates, and is including NRP to find ways to save.

However, board member Kevin Gibson noted the hundreds of child exploitation cases police haven't begun to investigate, due to lack of resources.

He also referenced concern from the public.  "For the public, because it's the public that's the first we hear from that say 'Where's the police officer?  It took way too long to get here, you don't hear from the police.  I called them yesterday, and I got nothing back'."
