Province to Help NRP Fight Auto Theft

It's part of an $18-million, 3-year, provincial plan to fight theft

Provincial government coming to the aid of Niagara Regional police to fight auto theft.

Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff says there will be $726, 659 over three years, to help police, but also promote prevention programs such as "Lock it or Lose it".

The government says the money is part of the new Preventing Auto Thefts Grant program, to support prevention, detection, analysis and enforcement.

It's across the province too, as 21 projects in total are receiving money from an $18-million investment over three years.

Oosterhoff adds the money will also support front-line officers and hold offenders accountable.

Police Chief Bryan MacCulloch says this will help build awareness of this problem, and work at finding solutions and enforcing greater action to stop this.

The province says a vehicle is stolen every 14 minutes across the province.
