Province Invests $91M to Add Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Applications now open for the EV ChargeON program

The province is looking to bring more electric vehicle charging stations to small and medium-sized communities.

Starting today, applications are being accepted for the EV ChargeON program.

The Ontario government is investing $91 million into the program, in order to build more charging stations in communities with less than 170,000 people, as well as Indigenous communities.

Non-profits, businesses, municipalities, Indigenous organizations and communities, and public sector organizations like hospitals and universities can apply for grants until January 31st, 2024.

"Our government is paving the way towards an electric future by building the infrastructure needed to support the electrification of transportation across Ontario," said Todd Smith, Minister of Energy. "This program will deliver thousands of chargers across the province, which will be powered by our reliable, affordable and clean electricity grid, making EV travel for businesses and families easier than ever."

"Building more public charging stations is part of our government’s plan to be a global leader in the electric vehicle industry and provide more travel options for commuters," said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. "The EV ChargeON program will help get more electric vehicles on the road by building the infrastructure needed to support them, while securing a better future for Ontario."

The money will also help build more charging stations on government-owned land, including rest stops on highways and tourist destinations.

As of last month, there were 135,000 electric vehicles registered in Ontario, with 2,900 public charging stations and 7,900 outlets.
