Province Investing $24 Million to Improve Safety in Schools

Investment includes funding for more support staff and mental health workers

The province is investing $24 million to help prevent violence in schools.

Education Minister Stephen Lecce made the announcement today, after a recent uptick in violent incidents at Ontario high schools, including a stabbing at St. Catharines Collegiate last week.

"Our schools must be safe for students," said Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education. "Students should never be afraid or nervous about going to school, and parents must be able to trust their children are protected. Today, our government is giving additional support to school boards and investing through partnerships to ensure our schools can provide a safe environment that promotes and fosters healthy learning."

The money will be used towards more psychologists and social workers, as well as more educational assistants.

This comes after groups representing education workers have asked the government to hire more mental health workers and support staff.
