Province Introduces Legislation Against Stunt Driving

The provincial government is taking action against high-risk driving.

In the legislature today, the Moving Ontarians More Safely (MOMS) Act was introduced.

It proposes longer driver's license suspensions and vehicle impoundment periods for motorists who engage in street racing, stunt driving and aggressive driving.

If passed, the act would also introduce increased measures to protect highway workers and pedestrians while requiring tow operators, tow truck drivers and vehicle storage operators to be certified.

Associate Minister of Transportation Kinga Surma says the province needs to take action against dangerous drivers by passing this bill.

"The MOMS Act targets the worst actors on our roads by creating escalating suspensions for repeat offenders and setting a lower speed threshold for stunt driving charges on municipal roads. With this Act, we are taking concrete action to protect people and families on our roads."

Between March and June 2020, drivers aged 16 to 25 represented 42 percent of drivers in collisions where speed of at least 50 km/hr over the posted limit was a factor.
