Power Plant in Thorold Expanding

City council told Northland Power expansion will bring more jobs, investment

The Northland Power plant on Allanburg Road in Thorold is pushing forward with expansion plans.

City council was told it'll bring more jobs and investment to the community.  It'll be adding another building to more land beside the current site.

Councillor Henry D'Angela added the company will use quicker acting technology to deal with pollution concerns.  "So when you want to run your air conditioners on a very hot day, that is what's going to be taking this peaking power in a very short span.  The old peaking power used to be the old Nanticoke plant that used to spew out a lot of toxicity, so they're moving to cleaner ones."

Council endorsed the plan, and the company will also appear before the region.

The Senior Director of Commercial Operations with Northland Power addressed community complaints about a yellow plume in the air, that it's not harmful, and new technology will eliminate that plume.

He further added the demand for energy will keep growing in the Niagara region in the years to come.
