Police Forces Step up Weekend Patrols

Local and provincial police aware of worldwide calls for civil unrest in relation to Middle East violence

Expect to see more Niagara regional police officers patrolling churches, mosques, cultural centres and schools in wake of the violence in Israel.

Chief Bryan MacCulloch tweeted the police are aware of a worldwide call for civil unrest today, and through the weekend.

He adds there hasn't been any credible threat to Jewish communities in Niagara, but they are watching alongside the provincial and federal governments.

Provincial police also say they have increased patrols in areas of religious and cultural significance.  The force adds while it respects the right of everyone to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, everyone also has a right to a safe environment.

The Buffalo Police Department has tweeted a similar message.

Meanwhile, the Canadian government is donating $10 million towards humanitarian efforts in Israel and the Gaza Strip.

About 700 Canadians have asked for help leaving the country.

Israel has ordered the evacuation of 1.1-million people in northern Gaza, as at least 2,800 lives have been lost on both sides of the conflict.
