Police Enforcing Unobstructed Licence Plates

A number of warnings issued after speed and red light cameras have been installed

Better make sure the licence plate on your vehicle is visible at all times.

Niagara Regional police began a 6-month campaign in October, reminding the public about the importance of clear and unobstructed plates.

Back in September, the region installed speed cameras, and red light cameras have gone up as well.  Police say intentionally obstructing the licence plate to avoid accountability will not increase road safety.

Police have issued 34 warnings to drivers.

Police add they will continue to enforce having a clear licence plate to the end of March.   A clear licence plate is critical should a collision happen, medical emergency, investigating crime or enforcing the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

S. 13(2) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) states:

"Every number plate shall be kept free from dirt and obstruction and shall be affixed so that the entire number plate, including the numbers, is plainly visible at all times, and the view of the number plate shall not be obscured or obstructed by spare tires, bumper bars, any part of the vehicle, any attachments to the vehicle or the load carried."
