Police Cleared After Man's Death

The investigation came after a man was found dead in the Niagara River gorge last September

A Niagara Parks police officer has been cleared of any wrong-doing after a 19-year old man died in Niagara Falls last September.

Police were searching for the man, and found him after pinging his cell phone.

An officer got out of her car, and tried to talk to him, but the man ran off and jumped over the retaining wall into the Niagara River escarpment.

Police say the officer yelled at him to stop.

He was found dead.

The province's Special Investigation's Unit has determined that though the officer's attempt to stop him may have been the final contributor to his fall, that was far from enough for liability.  Given what the officer knew of the man's mindset, doing nothing might have led to same result.
