PM to Appoint Investigator in Foreign Election Interference

The prime minister says his government will appoint an independent special rapporteur on foreign election interference.

Justin Trudeau says the ``eminent Canadian'' will be appointed soon, and will be nonpartisan and unimpeachable.

Last night's announcement came in the wake of recent media reports alleging China tried to meddle in the last two federal elections.

In addition to the appointment, Trudeau is asking two bodies -- the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians, and the watchdog National Security and Intelligence Review Agency -- to take on ``urgent work'' regarding foreign interference.
